OIC: Any peace initiative must guarantee Palestinian rights
The Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) stressed that any peace initiative, including the recently announced US proposed Middle East Peace Plan, will only succeed if it guarantee the inalienable right to self-determination of the Palestinian people guaranteed by the International law and relevant UN resolutions.
The commission stressed in a statement that any peace process needs to have full involvement of the Palestinians, who are the aggrieved party.
It reiterated its firm view that any unilateral act to alter the demographic, geographic and historical status of Jerusalem not only contravenes international law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention, but also goes against several UN Security Council, General Assembly and Human Rights Council Resolutions, which affirm the status of Jerusalem as an occupied territory under Israel, the occupying power, since 1967.
Welcoming the two relevant statements of the UN and OIC Secretary Generals, the Commission, affirmed its full support to a two-states solution which must help Palestinians in the establishment of their own independent, viable and contiguous State on the pre-1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital, including their unquestionable right to return to their homes and property, as decided in various UN Resolutions and guaranteed by international law.
