Moscow Bans 154 British of the House of Lords
Moscow banned 154 members of the House of Lords, the upper house of the British Parliament, from entering Russia. According to the Foreign Ministry statement, this was done in response to London’s decision to impose sanctions on almost the entire composition of the Federation Council.
British MPs, who are now barred from entering Russia, were involved in drafting sanctions against Russian politicians and businessmen “aimed at creating conditions for the political isolation of Russia and the destruction of its economy,” Russian diplomats are sure.
In addition, Moscow said, these politicians “used their authority to whip up anti-Russian hysteria in the UK, pandering to the Russophobic political course of the British Conservative government.”
On March 22, Great Britain imposed sanctions against deputies and senators who voted in favor of recognizing the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk republics. “This is a flagrant violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine,” the British government said in a statement.
Presenting a list of names of the lords who were under sanctions, representatives of the Foreign Ministry promised that it would be replenished.
In total, 800 people sit in the House of Lords. The lower house of the British Parliament is the House of Commons, which consists of 650 deputies.
