Watch all 11 contenders for the 2023 edition of the prestigious prize

Voting is now open for The FIFA Puskás Award, with the shortlist for 2023 featuring a stunning variety of goals from the men’s and women’s game.

The prize is named after legendary Hungarian striker Ferenc Puskás, famed for his glorious individual strikes, and celebrates the most spectacular goal of the qualifying period – from 19 December 2022 to 20 August 2023.

There are 11 contenders for the award this year, and you can watch each of them below before voting for your favourite.

FC Cincinnati v Pittsburgh Riverhounds 6 June 2023

The Argentinian winger executed a stunning left-foot volley from well outside the penalty area in Cincinnati’s US Open Cup quarter-final clash.

Barreal was found by an out-swinging corner from the right, and delivered a first-time strike that flew into the top corner, setting his side on their way to a 3-1 victory.

Did you know? Cincinnati’s progress in the US Open Cup ended in the semi-finals, as they were beaten by Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami on penalties after a dramatic 3-3 draw.

Germany v Colombia 30 July 2023

The teenager took the Goal of the Tournament crown from Australia & New Zealand 2023™ for a sensational goal that opened the scoring in Colombia’s 2-1 group-stage win. There seemed little danger when Caicedo received possession on the left of the area with two defenders in close attendance, but she bamboozled both, shifting the ball from right to left and back again, before curling it beyond Merle Frohms’ despairing dive into the very top corner. Did you know? Caicedo enjoyed an unforgettable year in 2022, representing her country at the South American U-17 Women’s Championship, the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica 2022™, the Copa America Femenina, and the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup India 2022™.

Brighton v Manchester City 24 May 2023

Scoring against the Premier League champions is one thing. Doing it in the way which Julio Enciso did is quite another. The Paraguay teenager left Ederson grasping at thin air with his thunderbolt right-foot strike from 25 yards out in the 1-1 draw. Did you know? This goal was Enciso’s first goal for Brighton in front of his own fans, with his previous efforts following a summer 2022 move from Libertad – against Bournemouth, Chelsea and Arsenal – all coming away from home.

Jordan U-20 v Korea Republic U-20 5 March 2023

A contender for the award which has everything. Kang started out close to the right touchline and just inside the Jordan half. He accelerated away from three challenges, confused another defender with a series of step-overs and then precisely fired home into the top corner beyond a motionless keeper to complete a 2-0 victory for Korea Republic in their AFC U-20 Asian Cup encounter.

Did you know? Korea Republic went on to reach the semi-finals of the AFC U-20 Asian Cup, losing out to eventual winners Uzbekistan on penalties, with Kang one of three players to miss from the spot.

Australia v England 16 August 2023

The Matildas‘ star striker had been forced to watch much of the FIFA Women’s World Cup from the bench due to injury, but she joined the party in style in the semi-final showdown with England. With Australia trailing and needing inspiration, Kerr delivered. The Chelsea forward collected the ball in her own half and advanced at a retreating England defence, before launching a right-foot rocket beyond Mary Earps. Stadium Australia erupted, but the joy was short-lived as England responded to advance to the final with a 3-1 victory. Did you know? Kerr wasn’t a fan of the beautiful game as a child. “Growing up I was 100 per cent [Aussie rules] football,” she said. “I hated soccer. I never had a soccer ball around the house.”

Atlas FC v CF América 26 February 2023

There are long-range screamers, and then there is this strike from Lozano. Club America were defending deep and in numbers to protect a 2-1 lead against Atlas in Liga MX, but they were powerless to prevent the Uruguayan midfielder when he took aim from 35 yards out with a vicious strike which swerved and dipped beyond the goalkeeper’s fingertips. Did you know? Lozano was part of the Uruguay youth team which triumphed at the 2015 Pan American Games, scoring the only goal of the final against Mexico to lead his nation to the gold medal.

Novorizontino v Botafogo FC-SP 27 June 2023

Botafogo’s defensive midfielder is hardly a prolific scorer, with his winning goal in the Brasiliero Serie B encounter the only time he found the net in the qualifying period for the award. With his back to goal and defenders close by as the ball bounced in front of him, Madruga executed a superb overhead kick from outside the area, which dipped just under the crossbar.

Did you know? Madruga’s stunning effort was only the sixth time he had found the net in his entire professional career to date.

UD Ibiza v Burgos 25 March 2023

Another strike worthy of a wider audience than the one which witnessed it on the day. Young UD Ibiza midfielder Morante controlled the ball on his chest outside the area, lifted it away from an opponent with a deft touch of his left foot, controlled it on his chest again and then unleashed an unstoppable left-foot volley to break the deadlock in this Segunda Division fixture.

Did you know? This was Morante’s first goal for Ibiza, having moved to the Balearic Island club from Real Madrid Castilla the previous summer.

Sporting v Boavista 12 March 2023

There looked to be little prospect of Nuno Santos scoring when the ball broke to him just beyond the penalty spot, with four defenders blocking his path to goal. However, Sporting’s Portuguese winger was not to be denied, producing an audacious left-foot rabona that left defence and goalkeeper flat-footed as it caressed the inside of the post on the way into the net.

Did you know? Santos was part of the Portugal team which featured in the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2015™, scoring two goals in the group stage before a quarter-final defeat to Brazil on penalties.

Kazakhstan v Denmark 26 March 2023

Kazakhstan’s unexpected 3-2 victory over Denmark in UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying was made all the more memorable by Tagybergen’s spectacular goal, which levelled the scores at 2-2. Receiving possession on the left of the field and well outside the area, the captain connected perfectly with his right foot to send the ball arrowing home and leave one team-mate with his hands on his head in presumed astonishment.

Did you know? Tagybergen’s piledriver was his first senior international goal, coming on the occasion of his 44th cap. He didn’t have to wait long for his second, scoring in the very next game against San Marino.

Brazil v Panama 24 June 2023

A team goal of the very highest quality, for which Bia Zaneratto provided the finishing touch. Brazil started the FIFA Women’s World Cup in fine style, cruising to a 4-0 victory over Panama with their third goal catching the attention of the globe. Debinha was the instigator as she was played in down the left before a deft one-two with Adriana saw her lift the ball into the area. Ary Borges then took control and seemed destined to score, only to elect to roll the ball back to Zaneratto who had the simple task of slotting home.

Did you know? Despite their ruthless and dominant display against Panama, Brazil suffered a shock group-stage exit from the tournament after losing to France and then drawing 0-0 with Jamaica.
