Egypt Affirms Palestinians’ Right to Return to Their Homeland, Establish an Independent State

Egypt reaffirmed its support for the Palestinian people's self-determination and their right to return to their homeland and establish an independent state, according to a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday.

This statement comes amid recent remarks from Trump to Fox News that, under his US takeover plan, Palestinians would have no right to return to Gaza.

He described the plan as a “real estate development for the future” and suggested that he would “own it,” with up to six different sites for Palestinians to live outside Gaza. The Arab world has rejected this plan.

“In light of the critical and decisive phase the Middle East region is going through, Egypt affirms that the only way to confront the risks and challenges threatening regional and international peace and security — stemming from the Israeli occupation and the recent Israeli aggression on Gaza and its repercussions — is for the international community to adopt an approach that respects the rights of all peoples in the region without discrimination or distinction,” the statement read.

This includes the Palestinian people, who, according to the statement, are suffering from unprecedented violations of their basic rights, including the right to live in peace on their land and in their homeland.

The statement further called upon the international community to unite behind a political vision for resolving the Palestinian issue.

Egypt emphasized that this vision must be grounded in the imperative of ending the “historical injustice” that the Palestinian people have endured and continue to face and restoring their noble, inalienable, legitimate rights.

In this context, the country maintains its position of rejecting any infringement upon these rights, including the right to self-determination, remaining on the land, and independence, affirmed the statement.

It also upholds “the right of return for Palestinian refugees who were forced to leave their homeland, in line with human values and the principles of international law and international humanitarian law, including United Nations resolutions, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the Fourth Geneva Convention.”

Additionally, Egypt warned that ignoring international legitimacy in addressing the region’s crises threatens to undermine the foundations of peace, which have required years of efforts and sacrifices to preserve and establish.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed a “complete Arab consensus” against the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza during a meeting with US Senator Chris Van Hollen in Washington DC.

The statement affirms Egypt’s “determination to continue cooperating with all regional and international partners to achieve a comprehensive and just peace in the region and establish an independent State of Palestine on its land according to international law, along the 4 June 1967 lines, with Jerusalem as its capital.”

His remarks followed President Trump’s recurring colonialist-style plan that Washington would “take over” Gaza and displace Palestinians into Jordan, Egypt, and other Arab countries, transforming the territory into “the Riviera of the Middle East.”
