Abbas shows Israel his ability to control the situation in the West Bank
Two weeks after Israeli occupation forces carried out the largest raid in Jenin in years, the Palestinian Authority security forces arrested five members of the Islamic Jihad Movement in Jenin and other activists in several Palestinian areas in the West Bank, which paves the way for an escalation between the Palestinian Authority and the factions.
The Palestinian Authority wants to respond forcefully to the activities of the factions in the occupied West Bank to show that it is still strong and has not ended, as many Palestinians says and Israeli officials, Sources in Ramallah said.
Israel claimed that its attack on Jenin targeted the militants, also seeking to urge PA President Mahmoud Abbas to take tougher measures against the Islamic Jihad and Hamas movements, which support attacks targeting Israelis in the West Bank, especially in the settlements.
Palestinian sources indicate that President Abbas will work to convince Israel that he is still present and able to control the situation, and for this reason the Palestinian Authority will arrest activists who have relations to cells that targeted Israeli soldiers or settlers, which will put it in confrontation with Hamas, Jihad affiliates and Elements of Fatah movement and its military arm “Al-Aqsa Brigades”, who believe that the PA’s performance is weak and unable to stand up to the Israeli right-wing government.
He described the camp as “an icon of struggle, steadfastness and defiance,” stressing, “We came to say that we are one authority, one state, one law, and one security and stability, and we will cut off the hand that will tamper with the unity and security of our people.”
The armed factions accused the Palestinian Authority of being weak and not doing enough to confront Israel.
Remove officials from power
Angry crowds confronted senior officials in the Palestinian Authority, and expelled officials during the funeral of ten people who were martyred in the Israeli raid, including the deputy head of the Fatah movement, Mahmoud Al-Aloul, in a move that sparked controversy and accused Fatah of Hamas of being behind it.
Observers say that Abbas’s negativity and his exclusive opinion within the Fatah movement, and the loudness of the voices opposing him within the movement and the PLO…, are all elements that allowed the Jihad and Hamas movements to expand their activities in the West Bank and transfer it from protests to assassinations targeting Israelis, which doubled the pressure on President Abbas and his authority.
leaked agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority to freeze Israeli military activity in the city of Jenin, and to give the PA an opportunity to impose its hegemony there, according to Israeli media, makes the PA and its leaders more embarrassed.
Channel 14 quoted an unnamed Israeli official as saying, “An agreement was concluded between Israel and the Palestinian Authority to give the Palestinian security services the opportunity to regain control of the city.”
