Egypt rejects Ethiopias statement on the Renaissance Dam
After Ethiopia rejected a draft resolution from the Council of Arab Foreign Ministers confirming the solidarity of the Arab League with Egypt and Sudan’s special position The Ethiopian Renaissance Dam As the two downstream countries, summoning its ambassadors in Egypt, Sudan, Russia and Britain, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry expressed in its statement, on Saturday, its total and detailed rejection of Ethiopias position on the university’s decision.
In the details, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry described the Ethiopian statement as unfit, confirming that it lacked diplomacy, and included an unacceptable insult League of Arab States And its member states.
The statement indicated that the Ethiopian approach indicates an intention to exercise hegemony over the Nile River, and that the Arab League’s decision reflects disappointment and deep discomfort with the Ethiopian positions throughout the course of the negotiations spanning the Renaissance Dam, particularly since the conclusion of the Declaration of Principles agreement in 2015, as the Ethiopian approach indicates Ethiopias intention to install itself as the sole beneficiary of its goods.
Material breach of agreement
He also stressed that Ethiopias insistence to fill the Renaissance Dam individually in July 2020 without reaching an agreement with my downstream country, is an attempt to make the path of negotiations hostage to internal political considerations, which represents a material breach of the Declaration of Principles agreement and proves beyond any doubt the ill intent of Ethiopia And her lack of political will to reach a fair and balanced agreement on the Renaissance Dam.
At the end of the statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that Egypt still has a balanced solution to the issue of the Renaissance Dam that secures the common interests of all parties and provides a historic opportunity to write a new chapter of cooperation between countries, an opportunity that must be seized for the benefit of 240 million citizens in Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia.
It is noteworthy that Egypt had responded to Ethiopias statements regarding talks on the Renaissance Dam, declaring that Ethiopia could not fill or start the Renaissance Dam except with the consent of Egypt and Sudan in accordance with Article No. 5 of the Declaration of Principles Agreement of 2015, which Addis Ababa signed, after announcing The Ethiopian Foreign Minister, Giddahsho Andrago, said that his country will start filling the Renaissance Dam as of next July, saying: “The land is our land, the water is our water, and the money with which the Renaissance Dam is built is our money and no power that can prevent us from building it.”
Sudan has reservations
In turn, Sudan preserved the draft resolution of the Council of Arab Foreign Ministers, as it considered that the decision was not in its interest and the Arab League should not be involved in this file, expressing its fear of the Arab-Ethiopian confrontation that might result from this decision.
It is noteworthy that during the meeting of the Ministerial Council of the League of Arab States, held a few days ago, Egypt submitted a draft resolution issued by the Arab League expressing solidarity with Egypt and Sudan in the file of the Renaissance Dam to take into account the interests of the downstream countries, and the Sudanese side was informed in advance of the draft decision to consult on it with an emphasis on Such a decision supports the position of the downstream states of Egypt and Sudan and reflects Arab support for the water rights of Egypt and Sudan.
