First Tunisia’s national dialogue kicks off

The first session of Tunisia’s national dialogue invited by President Kais Saied kicked off on Saturday amid a political crisis.

Saturday’s session was attended by representatives of the Tunisian Union of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (UTICA), National Union of Tunisian Women (UNFT) and the Tunisian Human Rights League NGO, along with four political parties, including the People’s Movement and the Popular Current.

Tunisian President Kais Saied excluded Brotherhood Ennahda Party, the Social Democratic Path Party and Afek Tounis Party.

Absence of Tunisia’s UGTT labor union

After the conclusion of the first session of the Consultative Committee for Economic and Social Affairs of the Consultative Body for a New Republic, Belaid stressed that the absence of Tunisia’s UGTT labor union (the largest trade union organization in the country) did not fail the session’s work.

Belaid made it clear that the door is still open for the union to join the dialogue, but without preconditions.

Saied was voted President in 2021 and has become globally popular for his highhanded moves, including dismissing the government and suspending parliament.

During the first session, participants will focus on finalizing the calendar of the next meetings, issues that will be discussed in conjunction with the economic and social aspects.
