German League: We will not stop Russian players
The Russian attack on Ukraine will not affect many German domestic sporting links, individual players will not face any suspensions, including football.
The European Handball Federation excluded Russian and Belarusian clubs from international continental competitions on Monday, but the German League will not impose sanctions.
The question was not asked, Frank Baumann, chief executive of the German Football League, told dpa on Tuesday. He added that the ban of two Russian players who play in the league, Azat Valiolin of Hamburg and Gleb Kalarach of Melsungen, would be unfair.
An official spokesman told dpa that the German Football League (Bundesliga) will not ban individual players from playing for their clubs.
A spokesperson for the German Ice Hockey League said that Russian players will be allowed to play in the league. The German Volleyball League wants to adhere to the guidelines of the International Federation, but currently there is no legal basis for excluding Russian players.
