Israel Investigates Possible Death of Yahya Sinwar in Gaza

The Israeli military said it was investigating the possibility that Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar was killed in Gaza on Thursday. Israel is working to confirm Sinwar’s death, a senior source told Al-Monitor, saying that Israeli intelligence is “very close” to identifying Sinwar through DNA testing but warned that the result is “not final yet.”

“The Israeli military and the Shin Bet are checking the possibility that one of the assailants killed was Yahya Sinwar. At this stage, the identity of the terrorists cannot be confirmed,” the military wrote in a post to X on Thursday.

Sinwar, who headed Hamas’ political bureau after Ismail Haniyeh was killed in August, has repeatedly been a target of the Israeli military and was briefly thought to be dead in early October after weeks of silence.

Israel’s public broadcaster Kan quoted two Israeli officials as saying that Sinwar haD been killed. Kan reported that each member of Israel’s security cabinet has been informed.
