Kuwait announces fruitful talks to resolve Gulf crisis
All sides keen to reach final agreement, says top Kuwaiti diplomat
Kuwait’s foreign minister said on Friday that there has been progress in ongoing discussions to resolve the Gulf crisis.
“Fruitful discussions have taken place recently in which all sides expressed their keenness to reach a final agreement,” Sheikh Ahmad Nasser al-Sabah said in a statement.
A day earlier, US daily New York Times reported that Trump was pressing to resolve the issue before he leaves office in January.
He thanked Jared Kushner, outgoing US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and adviser, for his efforts to end the dispute, which has seen Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt severe ties with Qatar since 2017.
Kushner met Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on Wednesday as part of the ongoing mediation efforts.
Accusing Qatar of supporting terrorism and meddling in their internal affairs, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt cut ties with Doha and imposed a land, sea, and air blockade on the country in 2017.
Qatar denies the charges and has voiced readiness for dialogue to end the impasse.
