Libya’s Parliament Gives Confidence to Bashagha’s Government
The Libyan House of Representatives (HoR) has given confidence to the government formation of Fathi Bashagha to replace the Government of National Unity of Abdul Hamid Dbeibah by a majority vote of 92 members out of 101 attending ones, according to an announcement by the Speaker of the HoR, Aqila Saleh.
Despite the session being on air, doubt was cast on the confidence vote as activists counted the names announced at the voting session of the HoR, saying they barely reached 70 not 92 as the HoR Speaker said.
Likewise, the number of attending HoR members was a source of doubt. The HoR said 101 members attended on Tuesday, knowing that Monday session was canceled because only 88 members had arrived, let alone the call by Saleh to make the vote via phone without physical presence in Tobruk until before the Tuesday afternoon’s session. Thus, activists insisted that the session lacked quorum.
Bashagha’s government is now considered the biggest in number in Libya’s history as it includes 40 members: a Prime Minister, three deputies, 30 ministers and six state ministers.
Members of the HoR, Mohammed Lino, and Abdullah Heneish also expressed skepticism about the quorum and said only 78 members voted at the session that was aired live on TV, saying Libyans had seen the fabrication.
