PSG keeper Sergio Rico admits he feels ‘very lucky’ as he recovers from head injuries
Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Sergio Rico says he feels ‘very lucky’ as he continues his recovery from a horse riding accident having left intensive care.
The 29-year-old Spaniard, who had been in an ICU after being involved in the incident in May, was transferred to a general ward earlier this week.
Rico reportedly sustained a serious head injury and was in a coma after being struck by a horse while participating in an annual pilgrimage in the El Rocio region of Spain.
An Instagram story post from Rico on Sunday said: ‘I wanted to thank each and every one of the people who have shown me and sent their love in these difficult days.
‘I keep working on my recovery, that is getting better every day. I feel very lucky. Once again, thank you all and I hope to see you soon.’

Rico played for Sevilla, having a loan spell at Fulham in 2018-19 and then another at PSG in 2019-20, before joining the latter club permanently in 2020.
Late last month, Rico’s wife Alba Silva revealed he was talking for the first time since emerging from his coma but is unlikely to remember the accident.
Silva told Antena 3: ‘He is improving. He communicates, Sergio communicates.
‘He calls us by name and everything, he knows perfectly who all of us who enter are and has a great memory.
‘I hope they will transfer him to the ward as soon as possible, but they have to be sure and they haven’t decided yet, so when they decide, we trust them.’
Asked if Rico remembers the incident, she replied: ‘I think not, but we just can’t know yet until he can talk [about it]. We try to keep him cool, calm while we’re together and that’s it.’

In the aftermath of the incident, Silva wrote on Instagram: ‘Don’t leave me alone my love because I swear I can’t, nor do I know how to live without you.’
Kylian Mbappe and Paris Saint-Germain paid tribute to Rico during their final game of the season on June 3.
PSG, who had already been crowned Ligue 1 champions, finished their season with a 3-2 defeat against Clermont Foot.
After scoring a penalty in the 21st minute, Mbappe celebrated his goal by holding up a shirt with Rico’s name and the No 16 on it.
PSG fans paid their own tribute to the goalkeeper, which included a giant shirt with his name and number in the stands.
