Russia Expresses Concern Over Escalation in Syria

Moscow calls for restraint as clashes intensify in Latakia and Tartus provinces

Russia voiced deep concern over the recent escalation of violence in Syria, where clashes between Syrian security forces and armed groups loyal to deposed Bashar Assad regime, have erupted in the Latakia and Tartus provinces, leading to numerous casualties.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova urged all influential Syrian leaders to take immediate steps to halt the bloodshed and prevent further civilian casualties.

A curfew has been imposed in several major cities, including the administrative centers of the affected regions.

“In the difficult conditions of Syria’s transitional period, maintaining national unity, ensuring security for citizens, and upholding their legal rights—regardless of their ethnic or religious background—are of utmost importance,” Zakharova said.

Moscow reaffirmed its commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, calling on all countries with influence in the region to contribute to de-escalation.

Russia also emphasized its readiness to coordinate efforts with international partners to stabilize the situation.

Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, military authorities have opened reconciliation centers for former regime loyalists to surrender their weapons. However, some factions have refused to comply, leading to clashes in multiple provinces.

Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led anti-regime forces to oust Assad, was declared president for a transitional period on Jan. 29.

Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on Dec. 8, ending the Baath Party’s regime, which had been in power since 1963.
