‘Trump still committed to a two-state solution,’ says Saudi Foreign Minister Jubeir
Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir said his country had pledged $100 million to support the G5 Sahel coalition and show its commitment to fighting terrorism. He stressed that Saudi Arabia condemned the decision by US President Donald Trump to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and denied claims that there was Saudi support for the move.Jubeir also denied that the Saudis had pressured Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas to either accept a US peace initiative or resign. Jubeir added, however, that he believed the Trump administration still intended to propose a peace plan and that such a plan envisioned a two-state solution, according to information shared by US officials.Jubeir denied claims that Saudi Arabia was blockading Yemen or that it had committed war crimes, instead blaming the Iran-backed Houthi rebels for the unfolding humanitarian disaster. He said Riyadh favoured a political solution but that the Houthis were resistant. He lashed out at Tehran, accusing it of destabilising the region and said it was up to the Iranians to move towards reconciliation with Saudi Arabia.Finally, he rejected the notion that Saudi Arabia had “lost” a power bid in Lebanon after Prime Minister Saad Hariri rescinded his resignation and was now governing alongside Saudi rival Hezbollah.
