Tunisian authorities seized assault weapons and large sums of money in Tunisia
Tunisian authorities seized assault weapons and large sums of money in local and foreign currency and arrested several people, the interior ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
The operation took place on Saturday night in the southeastern province of Medenine, not far away from the borders with neighboring Libya.
Caretaker Prime Minister Youssef Chahed and Minister of Interior Hichem Fourati visited the headquarters of the judicial police department where they supervised the progress of the investigation.
Speaking to reporters, Chahed said the seized weapons were stockpiled for later use in specific attacks targeting sensitive locations in Tunisia.
The security situation on the borders with Libya will figure high on the agenda of a ministerial council to be held soon, the prime minister revealed.
“Our security and military forces are on high alert and closely monitoring the situation in Libya,” he said, adding preparations are being made for possible flows of refugees.
