UN Urges Protection of Facilities After Israeli Forces Bomb UN School
The statement comes after the Israeli army bombed a UN school sheltering displaced Palestinians in al-Nuseirat Refugee Camp.
UN Secretary-General Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated on Wednesday that UN facilities must not be misused by warring groups and should be safeguarded during the conflict in Gaza.
“UN premises should never be targeted, nor should UN premises be used by any groups or any force from which to launch military activities,” Dujarric said in the UN briefing. “UN premises need to be protected.”
The statement comes after “Israel” bombed a UN school in the al-Nuseirat refugee camp in the central part of the Strip, murdering at least 14 people and injuring several others, among them UN employees.
The spokesperson added that UN premises also need to be respected by all parties.
It also comes after the Israeli forces detained a UN convoy in northern Gaza under the pretext of suspecting it was transporting wanted Palestinians.
More than 350 aid workers have been killed since the start of the war on Gaza, as per the latest estimates.
Information regarding the exact number of UN facilities affected or damaged during the war has still not been surveyed.
However, attacks have been reported in areas known to house aid workers.
In February, the UN estimated that 55% of buildings in the Gaza Strip had been destroyed.
