UNRWA Chief Criticizes Sweden’s Decision to Cut Off Support
Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), voiced his discontent regarding the Swedish government’s announcement to halt its funding for the agency in 2025.
Lazzarini described the decision as “disappointing and comes at the worst time for Palestine Refugees.” This announcement follows closely on the heels of a UN General Assembly resolution that overwhelmingly expressed support for UNRWA.
“Sweden has been a reliable longstanding partner to UNRWA providing both political and financial support for decades,” Lazzarini remarked. He further emphasized the gravity of the situation by stating, “This is a sad day for Palestine Refugees and the multilateral system which Sweden has spearheaded.”
The decision to cut funding arrives amidst what Lazzarini characterized as “unprecedented politically driven attacks” against UNRWA, which he claims are fueled by disinformation aimed at undermining the refugee status of Palestinians.
He warned that this withdrawal of support could significantly diminish the impact of Sweden’s previous investments in human development initiatives, particularly in education. “For the people of Gaza, this decision will double their suffering endured over the past 14 months,” he stated.
“I hope the Government of Sweden will reconsider its decision and pursue its longstanding solidarity by investing in both a political solution and the human development of Palestine Refugees through UNRWA.”
Lazzarini concluded with a plea for the Swedish government to reconsider its stance, urging them to continue their tradition of solidarity.
